Effects of exogenous application of five antioxidants on vigour, viability, oxidative metabolism and germination enzymes in aged cabbage and lettuce seeds

Ageing induces modifications capable of compromising seed vigour and viability. This study investigated the effects exogenous application five antioxidants: ascorbic acid (AA), gallic (GA), reduced glutathione (GSH), trolox glycerol, on physical biochemical lesions induced by controlled deterioration (CD) in Brassica oleracea (cabbage) Lactuca sativa (lettuce) seeds. The antioxidants were applied at 0.2, 0.4 0.6 mM to fresh seeds subjected CD: 75% viability (P75), 50% (P50) 25% (P25); deionised water (DW) served as control. Controlled resulted more abnormal seedlings production cabbage than lettuce Additionally, CD increased electrical conductivity (EC) protein carbonylation (PC), lowered antioxidant germination enzymes activities both species but lipid peroxidation only. Exogenous enhanced P25 P50 P25; seedling fresh, P75 cabbage; Electrolyte AA, GA, GSH seeds, while PC was glycerol species. Antioxidant heightened GSH, seeds; While DW it resolved that CD-induced differ species, exogenously are beneficial quelling injurious spin-offs oxidative reactions.
